Lost SNL Sketch: Star Wars Casual Friday On The Death Star

One of the biggest blockbusters of the summer, Solo: A Star Wars Story, hits theaters today. To mark the release of the second standalone movie, The Flat Circle is traveling to an SNL episode from a long time ago in a Star Wars sketch that never made it to air: “Casual Friday On The Death Star.”

The Star Wars SNL sketch was created for the ninth episode of Season 26. Charlie Sheen was the host and Nelly Furtado was the musical guest. The episode, which aired on January 13, 2001, was Charlie Sheen’s only appearance on Saturday Night Live.

“Casual Friday On The Death Star” is exactly what it sounds like. Charlie Sheen comes strolling in as an officer on the fabled battle station. The catch: a yellow sweater is draped over his casual gray uniformThe remainder of the Death Star’s crew is also sporting leisurely attire, including Darth Vader.

Tina Fey makes an appearance as Princess Leia. It is not the last time Fey plays Carrie Fisher’s iconic character, she later reprised the role on 30 Rock. Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan are also in the funny sketch, which was cut for time. What was not ready for prime time: Sheen’s theatrical accent. A harsh reminder that the actor has comedic chops, just not dramatic ones.

Given the glut of Star Wars projects in development and the recent announcement that there will be a Boba Fett spin-off film (that no one asked for), look for “Casual Friday” to be the plot of an upcoming Star Wars movie.
