The Flat Circle is renewing its interview series with Philadelphia bloggers. To kick things off, we chatted with Meghan from Work It Like A Mother. One half of the duo that writes the fitness blog for moms, Meghan discusses why she began blogging, the importance of focus to optimize fitness, and outdoor workout spots in the Philly area.
The Flat Circle: What inspired you to start a blog?
Meghan: I am a working mom of a 2.5 year old daughter, and after having her I struggled with finding balance in my life. I tried to be supermom and I just couldn’t. I have always been active (I took barre classes weekly until 36 weeks pregnant), and wanted to continue my fitness lifestyle after my daughter was born. I started this blog with my friend, Melissa, because we had the same goal: to help all moms find the best fitness class/program/etc for them. We wanted to provide them with all of the resources we are able, in order to make it easier for them.
TFC: What are your biggest challenges as a blogger?
MM: Time. There is no doubt that I am dedicated, but balancing work, family life, hobbies, and friends makes it challenging to find the time.
TFC: You blog on fitness, diet, and even a little fitness fashion. Are there any challenges to blogging about multiple subjects or do you find it easier to spread out your topics?
MM: Blogging about fitness and diet is relatively easy because I am living it everyday. I work out about 4 times a week, and I manage my diet daily. Fitness fashion is a newer area for me. I LOVE fashion, like really love it, but I tend to only wear activewear from Lululemon. The challenge for me is branching out and trying other brands, so I can give honest feedback.
TFC: Do you have any fitness tips for people with busy schedules who are trying to maximize 20-30 minutes of free time for exercise?
MM: I actually just wrote a piece similar to your question, which will be released in a week or so. My tip is to make it worth it. What I mean by that is if you only have 20-30 minutes to exercise, focus solely on that. Put your phone down – stop texting and scrolling through social media and eliminate all other distractions. Use that amount of time to get in the best workout.
TFC: Are there any outdoor workout spots in the area that are a great spot for families?
MM: I live in Montgomery County, on the border of Bucks County, and there is an awesome lake and park called Peace Valley. My husband and I take our daughter there to walk the trails and run around. It is absolutely beautiful.
TFC: You and I both admit to coffee addictions. Are there any coffee shops in the Philadelphia area that you like to go to regularly or are you more likely to make it home or in the office?
MM: On a day to day basis, I make coffee at home. I have a Keurig so it’s just easy! I do love Starbucks, but I probably only indulge once or twice a week. My daughter loves their cake pops, so it’s fun to take her there and enjoy a cup of coffee while she enjoys her pink cake pop.
TFC: If you were marooned on a desert island, what book, movie, TV box set, or album are you taking with you?
MM: Oh wow. I am not a big movie fan, but my husband and I just implemented “Friday Movie Night” where we take turns picking a movie to rent. The movie would have to be something entertaining and one that I could watch over and over again. I would have to say the Hangover Part II – I like this one much better than the first one. I am also a huge Bradley Cooper fan. TV hands down would be Friends. I could watch these over and over and never get bored. A close second is Entourage.
TFC: Is there a luxury item that you would have to take with you?
MM: A coffee maker… can’t live without coffee (and wine)!
